Customer Service Requires Service

I am starting this article with one of the biggest sources of irritation I have ever known. When I am calling a customer service number to either pay a bill, resolve an issue, whatever it is, and I have this person on the other end of the phone that seems to believe that I am messing with their personal bank account, instead of sounding like a good customer service rep, I just want to go nuts! Why do companies train their employees to sound like jerks, or worse? There, I feel better now! The point I want to make is that you do have a choice in the matter, if you are the kind of employer that cares about this sort of thing.

1. To stay on top of your business, be certain that you are staying in touch with technology. Without it, you will just be another little fish swimming out in the big ocean with only one fin. There is a ton of information on the internet. It’s free, just be sure the advice you follow is credible. With this technology, you can market, join social groups, and even brand yourself and business. The only way I know of doing it in a credible way takes time. Others may offer quick results, but it takes time to build trust and it is trust that customers must feel before they’ll unload their wallet for your products or services. I do say these things frequently, because it is that important!

2. Treat every customer as you would your friend. Be patient, informative and kind, but be certain that you understand their need or want. Without connecting either intellectually or emotionally, you will not fill their desire. Just going through the motions of a sale will not be enough to make that customer a loyal customer for life. You must fill the void if they are going to remember you and your business. A lot of people fail on that very point alone.

3. Think about how you respond to customer emails, messages or comments on your site. Are you really hearing what they are saying? Are you responding in an appropriate window of opportunity? Usually 24 hrs should be the very latest time to respond.

4. The quality of your service should be top notch. It should sound like you sound. Customers should feel like you would like to feel if roles were reversed. Point being, if your personality is not showing, who’s personality is? Be sure it’s yours!
